Anthony Eden

Anthony Eden

Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon (12 June 1897 – 14 January 1977) was a British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1955 until his resignation in 1957. He was the first out of fifteen British prime ministers to be appointed by Queen Elizabeth II in her seventy-year reign.

As a young Conservative Member of Parliament, he rose quickly to become Foreign Secretary at the age of 38, before resigning in protest of Neville Chamberlain's appeasement policy toward Mussolini's Fascist regime in Italy. He held that position again for the majority of the Second World War, and a third time in the early 1950s. After serving as Winston Churchill's deputy for over 15 years, Eden succeeded him as Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister in 1955, and won a general election a month later.
