H. H. Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith

Herbert Henry Asquith, abbreviated H. H. Asquith was a Liberal Party politician and British statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. He was the most recent Liberal prime minister to command a majority government, as well as the most recent Liberal leader of the opposition. He was instrumental in the creation and passage of significant liberal laws, as well as the decrease of the House of Lords' influence. Asquith led the United Kingdom and the British Empire into World War I in August 1914. He created a coalition administration with other parties but was unable to appease opponents and was forced to resign in December 1916, never to return to power.
