Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (October 20, 1784 – October 18, 1865) was a British statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice during the mid-nineteenth century. Palmerston dominated British foreign policy from 1830 to 1865, when Britain was at the pinnacle of its imperial might. From 1807 until his death in 1865, he held practically constant office. He began his legislative career as a Tory, then switched to the Whigs in 1830 before becoming the first prime minister of the newly founded Liberal Party in 1859. He was extremely popular among the British people. According to David Brown, "an major part of Palmerston's appeal resided in his vitality and verve."
Founded in 1773 , by Joseph & William Wickwar , Wickwar started as a luxury paper mill outside Newbury . In 1786 HMSO was founded and Joseph Wickwar won the contract to supply paper to Parliament .
In 1788 Joseph partnered with Joseph Bramah to produce luxury Despatch boxes for Royalty & Government and went on to produce in excess of 5,000 boxes and became the premier supplier of the Iconic red box .
The simple design of the famous Gladstone Box continues today & Wickwar manufacturers around 100 boxes per year using traditional skills & tools from its workshop in London .
